Primavera P6 vs MaintWiz: Use Alongside or Replace?
Primavera P6 is a scheduling tool planners know well, and many plants keep it. A shutdown also needs scope, permits, readiness gates, spares, contractors and cost, which teams often manage by hand beside P6. MaintWiz works alongside P6 through interoperability, or as the main plan for the stop when you want all of it in one system, so planners keep the terms they know.
How MaintWiz helps: Plants compare tools on the whole stop, not only on the schedule. MaintWiz adds readiness gates, permits and spares status next to a familiar critical path.

Which fits
When is Primavera P6 the better fit, and when is MaintWiz?
The honest split: P6 is the stronger scheduler for very large networks and portfolios; MaintWiz is the stronger home for permits, spares and field execution.

Choose Primavera P6 when
- The stop is a capital project or construction-style programme with one scheduling team and little work-order coupling.
- A mature team already runs P6 with an established SAP interface and meets permit and materials gates through existing procedures.
- Contracts or owners require P6 schedule deliverables and schedule-quality audits.
- The need is enterprise portfolio scheduling and resource forecasting across many sites.
Use MaintWiz alongside P6 when
- Permits, isolations and spares kitting are tracked in separate trackers against each activity.
- Thousands of SAP work orders must land in the plan and actual hours must return to the maintenance record.
- The field needs task lists and live status so the plan reflects the day, not last week's update.
- Management wants one readiness, cost and progress view for the stop.
Choose MaintWiz when
- You want one plan, in one system, for scope, schedule, readiness, permits, spares, field work and cost.
- You do not have a P6 estate, or want to build the critical path natively from Excel or Microsoft Project XML.
- Technicians should close checklists with readings and photos that update progress and cost.
- You want AI agents that review scope, estimates and schedule with a named approver.

How do Primavera P6 and MaintWiz compare area by area?
Public information on P6 comes from Oracle's documentation and the GAO schedule guide; rows where P6 is stronger are marked.
| Area | Primavera P6 (public information) | MaintWiz |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduling engine | Critical path scheduling, resource and role levelling, and multiple baselines1,3; Oracle sizes P6 EPPM projects up to 75,000 activities2 Stronger for very large networks. | Native Gantt with critical path, float, baselines, critical chain analysis and what-if scenarios, sized for a stop's network |
| Portfolios | Enterprise portfolio and multi-project management across sites1,2 Stronger for portfolio scheduling. | A shutdown and turnaround module for each stop, in a CMMS used across sites |
| Schedule risk | Monte Carlo schedule risk analysis in Primavera Cloud3 | Monte Carlo confidence of finish and the drivers of the forecast finish, on the live plan |
| Data exchange | Exports and imports XER, Primavera XML, Excel and Microsoft Project XML4 Stronger for open file exchange. | Interoperability with P6; imports task lists as Microsoft Project XML or Excel |
| Permits and isolations | Permit-to-work and isolation management are not described in the Oracle P6 documentation we read | ePTW permits and isolations on each work order, blocking close while open |
| Readiness gates | Not described in the Oracle P6 documentation we read; readiness is usually tracked outside the schedule | Readiness gates configured to your requirements, with waivers recorded by name, reason and date |
| Spares and SAP | Materials can be loaded as resources, and GAO notes that a reliable schedule must reflect materials and resource availability5; a link to SAP work orders and stores status is not described in the documentation we read | Needed, in stock and short, with the SAP request or order behind each part; SAP in PM or MM mode |
| Field execution | Not described in the Oracle P6 documentation we read; progress is usually updated by planners | Checklists with ticks, readings and photos, QR scan, offline on transaction screens |
| Products | P6 Professional (desktop), P6 EPPM (browser) and Primavera Cloud are separate products1 | One shutdown module on the MaintWiz platform |
The rival
What is Primavera P6?
Oracle Primavera P6 is an enterprise scheduling suite used for large projects and turnarounds.
Oracle sells it as P6 Professional, P6 EPPM and the newer Primavera Cloud service1. It calculates critical paths, loads and levels resources, keeps baselines and plans across portfolios, and exchanges data by XER, XML, Excel and Microsoft Project files1,4. Permits, spares status, field execution and maintenance work orders live in other systems.
- Oracle's sizing guide classes P6 EPPM deployments up to 7,500, 25,000 or 75,000 activities per project, as classification criteria rather than hard limits2.
- GAO's schedule guide describes critical path scheduling, resource-loaded schedules and regular updating as the basis of a reliable schedule5.
- Primavera Cloud adds Monte Carlo schedule risk analysis and up to five project baselines3.
- Do not assume P6 cannot handle large turnarounds: size is not the issue. The gap is everything around the schedule.

Working alongside
How do you run MaintWiz alongside P6, or make it the main plan?
Keep P6 where you use it and run one stop in MaintWiz.
Many plants keep P6 for capital projects and the company schedule and run shutdowns in MaintWiz. Pilot one stop and compare.
- 1
Import
Bring the task list from your current tool as Microsoft Project XML or Excel.
- 2
Compare
Check the critical path and float against your current plan.
- 3
Run alongside
Run one stop in both and compare status daily; keep the scheduler for the schedule if your team prefers.
- 4
Decide
Keep both, or make MaintWiz the main plan for the stop and train planners, supervisors and technicians.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is Primavera P6 enough for a plant shutdown?
It is enough for the schedule. A shutdown also needs scope, permits, readiness gates, spares, contractors and cost, which teams often track in separate trackers beside P6. MaintWiz holds those in one plan next to the critical path.
Can MaintWiz replace Primavera P6 for turnarounds?
For the turnaround itself, yes: MaintWiz has a Gantt with critical path and float, baselines, what-if scenarios and critical chain analysis, and adds readiness gates, permits, spares and field execution. P6 stays the stronger tool for very large portfolios.
Can I use my P6 schedule with MaintWiz?
Yes. MaintWiz is interoperable with Primavera P6 and imports task lists through Microsoft Project XML or Excel. Check the critical path against your current plan before you switch.
Do we have to give up P6 for the rest of the company?
No. Many plants keep it for capital projects and run shutdowns in MaintWiz.
Can P6 handle a very large turnaround?
Oracle documents P6 EPPM project classes of up to 75,000 activities.2 Size is rarely the gap; permits, spares and field status around the schedule are.
Does MaintWiz work with SAP?
Yes. It connects in SAP PM or SAP MM mode, shows the request or order behind each short part and keeps SAP as the system of record.
